A 3 year old prayer, a dream becoming a reality.

October 2012. Before we planted Kulture, when it was just a vision that 5 families were getting behind and running after, we prayed for this building. We prayed that God would turn this old bar / entertainment venue that was for sale into a home of hope. We prayed that instead of a place that people went to get lost and forget their lives, they would instead come to find life and purpose. Brokenness to restoration. Hurting to healing. Addiction to freedom. Anger to forgiveness. Lost to found. Darkness to light.

“But God, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to bring your light to this community!” And sure enough, we realized that it was. Just not right then.

We prayed. We prayed more. We gathered in the parking lot, walked around the perimeter of the building, and then once again, prayed. But the door slammed shut. Shortly after we believed for this building, a group of people bought it. And sure enough, it went right back to being a bar / entertainment venue. WHAT?! “But God, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to bring your light to this community!” And sure enough, we realized that it was. Just not right then.

Fast forward to October 2015. We’ve spent the past 3 years as a portable church, meeting in the Jr. High and High School here in town. We learned that the church was not the building we prayed for, but instead it’s us. It’s us being in our communities, trying to live like Jesus, love like Jesus, and lead like Jesus. And sure enough, the people that moved into the building that we prayed for moved out! Was this God opening a door to a prayer that was a distant memory?

It’s crazy to look back not only to almost 4 years ago, but to last October when the building went up for sale again. The whirlwind process of looking at the building, inspections, appraisals, negotiations, financials, vision-casting, and gigantic faith-steps has us on the brink of stepping into our home base here in Pontiac. What a surreal moment it was signing those closing papers, thinking, “I can’t believe this is actually happening, I can’t believe this 3 1/2 year old prayer is being answered.”

So we’re in the building right now, tearing everything down that represented brokenness and sin and rebuilding it into a center of life change and love. This is going to be a place where the lost can find hope, family, and restoration. But most of all, it will be a place where people can find Jesus. But through this whole process, and even when the building is updated and finished, the same realization will remain. This is just a building. We call it ‘The Roadhouse’ because that’s what the people before us named it and we just thought it sounded cool. Nothing special, no deep meaning behind it. These four walls don’t define us as a church. WE are the church – each and every one of us. And WE as the church will continue to go into our communities day in and day out with one goal in mind:
